Courtney Kloor: Core Curriculum in Rome 2018
Italy is by far one of the most popular study abroad destinations, and for good reason. There is incredible history from ancient Roman Emperors to the renaissance. There is art and architecture every where you look, there are incredible landscapes from the Amalfi Coast to the vineyards of Tuscany, but one of the things Italy is most well known for is of course FOOD!
Italian food is renowned across the world from its pizza and pasta to its saltimbocca and suppli and everything in between. The opportunity to indulge in all the cheese and cannoli I could, was a large part in my decision to study abroad in Rome, Italy for the summer. And man, I was not disappointed!
One of my favorite food adventures while in Rome was attending a pasta making class where we were able to mix the ingredients and then roll out our own past before the chef whisked it away and brought it back to us full cooked and covered in delicious sauces. Eataly is an Italian food market/ grocery store with locations across the world, but naturally the biggest and best is in Rome! it is multiple floors with floors dedicated to fresh produce, cheese, meats, desserts and everything else you can imagine. This was not just a fun excursion, one of our professors let us have class there one day with an excellent cappuccino and cannoli in hand.
One of my favorite restaurants while in Rome was a tiny hole in the wall place that only had about four tables and no menus. Not that it mattered we always got the same thing! It was an incredible stuffed chicken breast with a sage peppercorn glaze. We went to this restaurant multiple times over the summer and it will always be one of my favorite restaurants and one of the best memories from my study abroad experience.
