Sloane Saxon: AU Honors College – Study and Travel in Germany Summer 2022
Halfway through my program, my classmates and I spent a few days in Nuremburg, located in
the upper part of Bavaria! Most notably, Nuremburg is known for being the host city of the
trials the Allied Powers held against the Nazi’s at the end of World War II. One of the first cites
we visited, the Hall of Justice, really enraptured Germany’s desires to commemorate but not
glorify the atrocities that happened during that period and provide information that’s digestible
and accurate for any viewer.
Even before World War II, Nuremburg was a historically significant location! On our walking
tour of the city, it was hard to ignore the vast greenery of the city paired alongside the
Medieval fortified walls. Majority of the people in town walked, making it incredibly easy to
navigate from shop-to-shop and restaurant-to-restaurant. This was the part of our program
where we had ample free time. My friends and I would grab lunch, pick a spot to sit, and hang
out for hours.
One of the best meals I had in Nuremburg was at Zum Gulden Stern, a restaurant in the heart of
the city which had been there for nearly 600 years! Although I was a little apprehensive to try
some of the authentic German meats and sides, the cozy atmosphere paired with the good food made for an incredible experience.
In the evenings, after afternoon activates and dinner, my classmates and I would trek from our
hotel to the Nuremburg Castle, which provided a clear view of most of Nuremburg. We would
people watch, and when we felt chatty, conversed with the locals. It was the first time on the
program where I felt less like a tourist and more like a local.
Nuremburg was by far one of the hardest goodbyes of the program, but I goal is to return, grab
a delicious Nuremburg sausage, and sit underneath the Nuremburg Castle once again.
